USEFUL TIPS AND ADVICE FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your family portrait session will be customized to fit the style and look your family would like. A deposit will hold your selected date. The final amount is paid ahead of your session date or on the day of your session. This payment is non-refundable, but is transferable. We will then chat on the phone or via email, so we can talk about you and your family, your family’s interests and personalities. We will discuss the type of looks you would like as well as location ideas. I suggest getting ideas from magazines or my PINTEREST account for Family/Children/Teens photography. We can text or email about the images that inspire you.

WHAT TO WEAR
What to wear is usually what concerns clients the most. Don’t worry, just read my suggestions below, I am here to help you out every step of the way! I like clients to send me photos of potential outfits they have chosen for their family and themselves. Even if I don’t suggest any changes to the clothes, it helps me know the kind of look the client is going for and I can plan accordingly. Don’t forget to check out my PINTEREST account for lots of ideas.
I suggest planning way in advance! Waking up the morning of the shoot, feeding the kids, while scrambling around and trying to throw something together just doesn't get the day off to a good start!
Show Off Your Family’s Style: Your family or individual portrait is about you and/or your family. There is no rule that a portrait has to be formal. Choosing clothes that reflect who you are will result in better photos that have more meaning to you.
Wear coordinating colors instead of matching colors: The most important thing is that you don’t dress everyone the exact same outfit. You will want to look back at these photographs and remember the unique personalities of each family member. Wear clothes that reflect a little bit of your personalities. Make sure all clothes are in good shape, clean and wrinkle free.
Colors to choose: It’s a great idea to choose a color family and then add your accent colors. Incorporate different shades of these colors in everyone’s outfits. For example, different shades of blue with white accents throughout. Mixing in patterns is a great way to keep the look casual but not too matchy. Don’t blend in with the background, for example, don’t wear green when taking pictures in a pasture or park. I suggest staying away from large logos and graphics. Check out my PINTEREST account for Family Outfit Ideas.
Create Balance: Avoid having one member of the family stand out too much. If everybody is wearing dark colors, it can feel unbalanced if just one is wearing a light color. Create balance by breaking up dark and light. One way to do this is to alternate tops and bottoms. For example, if dad is wearing khaki pants and a dark shirt, mom can wear jeans and a light blouse, and to tie both together your children can wear a complimentary mid range color.
Add Accents: Bold accent colors can really add a great dynamic look to a portrait. Choose neutral colors to wear and add bold colored accents such as a scarf for women, a shirt that is covered by a blazer or jacket for men, or a bold pair of shorts with a more subdued shirt.
Accessories: Accessories, jewelry, hats and scarves can give a nice unique touch.
Your home: Hopefully you will love your pictures so much that you will want to print and display them in your home, choose outfit colors that will compliment your home decor.
Seasonal: Consider the season and location when making clothing selections. Spring type clothing in Spring, such as shorts and dresses and Winter type clothing in winter, such as jackets, winter hats and scarves. Choose outfits that will compliment the colors in the background and not compete with them.
Shoes: Don’t forget about the shoes. Make sure shoe color blends in with outfit choices. If you are wearing all neutral colors but your son is wearing bright red tennis shoes, your eye will go straight to the tennis shoes! Professional photographs are an investment and the details like shoes and socks matter!
Smiles: Bring your best smiles! Don’t worry if one of the younger family members does’t bring theirs, these natural candid shots are often the best pictures to look back on!
ON THE DAY
Please make sure the younger members of the family are well rested and had a good breakfast. We will meet at the designated meeting area, where I will get the importunity to get to meet your family and learn a little more about each of them before we start.
I will give your family lots of posing ideas and direction throughout your session so they feel at ease. As well as the more posed shots, I like to get some pictures of your children just relaxing and having fun as these candid shots are often the best for showing their true selves.
I want more than anything for this to be a fun and relaxed experience for you. So we will take as many breaks as needed.
What to bring:
Bring a couple of extra clothing choices just in case something isn’t working as well as expected.
Accessories and props, such as hats and scarves etc. For children, maybe their favorite teddy bear, dress up sword, or princess crown.
Comfy shoes to walk in for in-between scenes changes.
Makeup, such as lip stick, lip gloss, powder. Hair accessories, brush and hairspray.
Something to drink or a snack.
AFTER YOUR SESSION
After your session I will carefully select the best photos for you to choose from, then editing and color correction is applied. You will receive your photos via an online gallery to review within 30 days.
Prints and other product orders will arrive within 4-6 weeks depending on the type of products ordered.
Please note that I only release fully edited images. Not only to protect my brand, but to also ensure you are receiving the best quality fully-finished portrait.
