HORSE & RIDER FAQ
USEFUL TIPS AND ADVICE FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT
WHAT TO EXPECT
All photography sessions are completely customized to each client. A deposit will hold your selected date. The final amount is paid ahead of your session date or on the day of your session. This payment is non-refundable, but is transferable. We will then chat on the phone or via email about your and your horse. I like to hear the type of riding you do, your style, your likes and dislikes and the type of looks you would like. I suggest getting ideas from magazines or my PINTEREST account for Horse & Rider/Black Background photography. We can text or email about the images that inspire you.
Travel
A $45 travel fee applies to areas 25 miles outside of 30009 zip code.

WHEN IS THE BES TIME OF DAY TO DO MY SESSION?
Although clients are often hoping for sunny weather, a cloudy day is the best for filtered beautiful light. Harsh mid-day sun can create the harshest light and can cast unflattering shadows. If we need to take your pictures in mid-day sun I will be looking for lots of shady places. Early morning and evening sunlight is the most flattering and can create a lovely golden glow.
Choose a day that isn’t going to busy at your barn. If everyone is packing up to leave or return from a horse show it may be too busy for your horse to stay focused. So let’s try to choose a day/time that it’s a little more quiet.
WHAT TO WEAR?
A few top tips for choosing your outfits. Whether you choose to wear jeans, riding pants, skirts, blazer, mini-dresses, maxi-dresses, prom dress, wedding dresses, costumes, tutus, fairy wings, vintage clothing, cowboy hats, high heels, bare feet, I want you to feel comfortable and beautiful! Don’t forget to check out my PINTEREST board for lots of ideas.
Confortable: Wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable. Even if you wear a prom dress, bring tennis shoes to walk to different locations.
Creative: It’s important that your shoot reflects your personality, but keep in mind that this shoot is not something you do every day, so don’t be afraid to be brave and a get a little creative with your choices.
Be You If you love to dress up and look glamorous, bring a dress and your false lashes! If you aren’t one for dressing up, a simple fitted cute jacket, jeans and boots will make sure you look casual, yet smart and tends to suit every size and shape.
The more choices the better! Bring lots of outfit choices, sometimes something just doesn’t work and then you have options. Better to have it an not need it than wish you had brought it.
Bring at least three different styles of clothes such as:
Horsey outfit: Riding pants or jeans, yard boots and a polo shirt/shirt.
Show clothes: Wear your show clothes if you like. Riding jackets can also look great with a white shirt and jeans.
Smart/casual outfit: Jeans, a cute blouse, sweaters, floppy hats, boots and heels.
Blazers/jackets: Fitted jackets always look great, but also your riding jacket could be worn with a nice blouse and jeans.
Glamorous: A prom dress, summer dress, boho dress, or an outfit you might wear out for the evening. If you wear a dress or skirt and want to sit on your horse, make sure it’s wide enough!
Accessories: Hats, cowboy hats, flowers for your hair, scarves, jewelry, fairy wings! Bring as much as you can.
Color choices: Think about colors that compliment you and your horse. Bring one brightly colored item.
Your Style: If you have more of a casual style, still bring a variety of casual clothes. Even just changing your top will be good.
Stay away: Best to stay away form the color green, large logos and wording on clothing. No chipped nail polish!
More than one person: If there is more than one person in the shoot, make sure your colors all compliment each other.
Prep time: Make sure you give yourself lots of time to prepare and don’t wait till the night before! The longer you have to prepare, the better.
Makeup: Bring your makeup, hair brush and hair ties. Even if you want a natural look, please bring setting powder and lip gloss. I can help with your hair and makeup if you need or suggest a good hair and makeup artist if you would prefer.
Prep clothes: Iron your clothes if they need it. Comfy shoes for walking too and from locations. No chipped nail polish as this really shows up in your pictures. Please make sure your boots are clean!
Bring your best smile!
HOW TO PREP YOUR HORSE
Now that you are feeling prepared, it is time to get your horse ready! Here are some quick tips to make sure your horse is looking his best for your photo session!
Bathe your horse: The night before is best so he is ready to go the next day.
The day of the session: Make sure you get to the barn early. Finish prepping your horse before your session starts.
Prep: Clean eyes/nose, stable stains removed, hooves cleaned. All sawdust removed from the tail.
Details: If you like a more polished look, make sure manes are pulled, hooves are polished, ears/muzzles clipped. A braided mane and tail if you like.
Feed: Feed your horse before your session so he is happy!
Fly spray: This is one of the most important things to remember, especially in the summer. It’s hard for your horse to be happy with ears forward if he is constantly shaking his head from the flies.
Exercising your horse: If your horse is typically a little more hot headed, lunging or riding your horse before your photographs is a good idea to take the edge off. Just be sure he’s not sweaty for the session.
Clean tack: Make sure all tack you plan on using is clean, especially the bit. Use a leather halter or bridle. Stay away from distracting bright color halters.
Clean barn isle: If you want photos of your horse with a black background please make sure the barn isle is clear of brushes and blankets etc.
Accessories: Not what you would always think of for your horse! Accessories can make your pictures look unique. A flower garland can look beautiful.
Braided Mane: This is not necessary but looks polished for Black Background Sessions. Braiding needs to be finished before your session time.
Bring a friend: It’s not necessary, but it’s a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help you both stay looking your best.
ON THE DAY
I like to arrive a little early to your barn so I can check the light, as well as scout for good locations and backdrops to take your pictures. Don’t worry if you think your barn looks a little run down, I can always find somewhere that will work just fine to take your photographs.
My goal is for the day to be fun and relaxed. We will give your horse lot’s of breaks if he needs it. I don’t want you to feel rushed.
What to bring:
We will look over your outfits and decide which we think will work best. Bring a selection of your favorite outfits for the day as well as couple of extra outfits.
Accessories, such as flowers for your hair, hats, scarves etc. Also, any accessories for your horse!
Makeup, such as lip stick, lip gloss, powder. Hair accessories, brush and hairspray.
A blanket or towel for covering up with while changing outfits in your car.
Fly spray.
Something to drink or a snack.

Sometimes your hair may be in your face or it’s an unflattering angle. I can ensure you that you will get the very best edited images from your session.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The photos from your session will be yours to share on social media as much as you’d like. Credit to @psebuschphotography is always appreciated.
OH NO, WHAT IF?
It’s raining! Don’t worry we will just reschedule for another day. I love a cloudy day, it’s the most flattering for you and your horse. Even on a sunny day I will be looking for shady areas under trees and tall barns etc. We just don’t want rain!
My horse is being naughty! All horses are naughty sometimes, and expecting him to be perfect isn’t going to happen! If your horse feels your frustration he will get worse and when I capture him looking good, we don’t want pictures of you looking annoyed at him! So no matter what happens, whether you get bitten, head-butted, stood on or dragged across the field, just keep smiling and looking in love with your horse! This way I promise you we will get some great shots!
